CeBIT 2008: The Golden Age Arrives For A £20,000 MacBook Air

The anorexic MacBook Air has barely had time to float away on a gentle breeze before somebody has decided that it needs some gold and Swarovski pretties to tie it down.

This is the Golden Age MacBook Air – which somewhat resembles Cate Blanchett’s clobber in the recent movie of the same name. It was unveiled this week at CeBIT 2008 to the ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’ of passers by. In fact the only thing that brought more gasps was the £20,000 price tag.

This baby is drowned in 12,000 Swarovski crystals which have been individually – yes, individually - set into 24K gold. A week of man hours is needed to create each one which is why there will only be 20 made. The folk at Bling My Thing say:

“There is another fact which makes this piece of art truly unique: each of these transparent Swarovski crystal is coated with 24k gold underneath. What does it mean? It means, what you see is the true colour of gold, and it sparkles, too. Swarovski offers special crystals called Crystal Aurum but it is mat, because it is coated with 18k gold at the top. Although it is beautiful, the surface is easily scratched compared to our crystals.”

Still, at £20,000, we’re looking at a turnover of £400,000 for some blinged laptops which ain’t too shabby.

Selfridges in Oxford St, London, will be allowing peasants to ogle one and, possibly buy it, on March 18.-Martin Lynch
