Explanation of Why Hard Disk Seems Smaller Than It Should Be

Reading this article will give you an easily understood explanation of a basic computer concept that’s confusing to people a lot. First, I’m going to explain two basic computer jargon that it will help for you to understand.that it’ll help for you to know.

I’ll also make clear why there is a discrepancy between the size of a computer’s hard disk when you order it, or what’s on the label on your computer, and how much space is available on it, when you’re actually looking at what it says on the computer screen, why it seems to not be as big.

First, I’ll just define those computer terms. The two terms are “erase” and “format.” Both of the terms essentially have the same meaning, so it’s OK to use them interchangeably.

A hard drive is the part in your computer which in fact holds everything, your documents, pictures, music and the operating system of your PC itself, that might be Windows Vista or Mac OS X or anything else. Most times, everything that’s stored on a PC is going to be found in the hard drive.

Hard disks have been measured for a while in gigabytes and are now into the terabyte range, which is a thousand times larger than a gigabyte.

A byte is essentially the smallest unit of measurement with computers (only bits are smaller than bytes).  A kilobyte is approximately 1,000 bytes. A megabyte is approximately 1,000,000 bytes. A gigabyte is essentially 1 billion bytes. A terabyte is basically 1 trillion bytes. It’ll go a long way past that but not for a while yet, so forget about that .

You might have a computer that is a few years old. You may have the idea you have a certain sized drive based on the label on the computer, or the specifications on the receipt that you got when you purchased the computer.

Let’s say you want to find out how big your hard drive is. When using a Macintosh, you can do this by selecting the the hard drive icon, then clicking on the File menu and then clicking on “Get Info.” That opens a window with the size of the hard drive..

If you’re on a Windows computer, you double-click the Computer icon and click on the drive once. It will usually tell you how big the drive is on the left-hand side of the window.

If you want to see the steps, I suggest Windows Vista how to or Mac how to lessons, but specifically video lessons so you can watch the steps and learn.

Once you see how big the drive is, it’s going to show up as less than what you think.

This is because of what happens when the drive is first set up for use. “Formatting” or “erasing” is what you call it when getting the drive ready to be used. Until this happens, the drive is sort of like the foundation of a house before the construction of the house.

I don’t need to tell you that you can’t live a house pad because there are no walls or roof. That’s what you do when you format a hard drive. You “partition” and format it. You may have heard the word partition as a panel which separates one area of a room from another. A partition is basically the same thing.

When you are partitioning and formatting a hard drive, or erasing it, whichever term works for you, what you’re doing is basically building the walls. You start off with the house pad, and then you put up the walls and the roof and you prepare it for use. Until you do that, a person can’t live in it.

For the same reason, if you have got a hard drive that’s not formatted, you can’t put anything on it because it doesn’t have any walls or roof.

So if you think about erasing or formatting a drive, that is, getting it ready to be used, as being like building a house on of a house pad, you might already begin to understand why a hard drive’s size seems smaller than it should be.

It’s almost as if you’ve lost space when you format it, compared to what the drive says it is if you look at the actual physical drive label, the box it came in or the computer that came with that drive inside it. It will say a larger size than you actually get when you’re looking at the drive’s size once it has been partitioned and formatted.

So in other words you start off with a foundation that’s one thousand square feet, after the walls are up, you no longer have a thousand square feet left, not in actual, floor space. You have some of that space taken up by the walls.

Fundamentally , that’s what happens when you format a drive. It gets partitioned and formatted and ready to use. In that process, that space is lost. I think it’s a easy way to think of it, and it helps people understand.

Hopefully that makes sense and clears up a little bit of a mystery. Many of my clients have asked me about that — this is how I explain it, and it seems to make sense to them. I hope it makes some sense for you.

If you haven’t lived under a rock for the last several years, you’ve seen the ads for the VOIP Service Provider called Vonage, offering a box that, in addition to an Internet connection, lets you make unlimited long distance calls to the US and Canada for a low, flat fee. There are competing VOIP providers, like Skype (owned by eBay) with different pricing models.

VOIP stands for Voice Over Internet Protocol, and digitally translates your voice into packets that get routed over the Internet, much the same way an email is broken down into packets and sent over the Internet. The benefit of VOIP comes in comparison to traditional switched telephone networks, where calls were routed through individual switches, requiring extensive infrastructure on the part of the telephone companies, and thus, required charging per minute billing.

However, during the telecom boom of the late 1990s, every major telephone company laid new fiber optics lines and switched to a packet driven methodology, greatly reducing their operating expenses – albeit at the cost of a very large investment up front in the new technology.

The result of this is that, eventually, everything is going to go to VOIP, but certain VOIP service providers are jumping the gun, and you can benefit from it. There are VOIP providers that require a fixed monthly service fee or give you free calls to other numbers (or addresses) within their network, but charge you to call a regular land line, and there’s even a VOIP provider that’s looking to have you buy a $300 piece of hardware and get free phone calls for life.

In the past, VOIP software had latency issues – you’d speak, and there’d be a small (but noticeable) bit of lag between when you spoke and when the other party would hear you. As the networks have matured and grown more robust, and the digitization software has improved, this has ceased to be an issue. VOIP is a great technology for home use. With its virtual voice mail system and multi-line options, it’s also a great solution for a home based business, or home office for an entrepreneur; most VOIP service providers charge far less than what a typical telephone company does for the same level of services.

No discussion about VOIP would be complete without talking about one of the major gating factors of VOIP technology. That gating factor is that a good VOIP connection and conversation depend heavily on the reliability of your highspeed Internet connection. If your connection is not fast or reliable, chances are very high that your experience with VOIP technology is not going to be good. Unfortunately, the VOIP carrier you choose has no control over the speed or reliability of your Internet connection.

Article marketing works. That’s the simple truth, my friend.  Why am I so sure that it works?  Simple.  Simply put, I’ve proven it by getting 25,000 unique visitors to my brand spanking new website in less than 8 weeks by following this five step process.

In case you haven’t picked up on how significant that is, how much do you think Google would charge you to get 25,000 visitor through Pay Per Click advertising?  Quite a bit more than either of us would like, I think.  I get better sales conversions from article leads than I do from Pay Per Click, anyways, which is one of the reasons I like it.  (Also, that way I know I’m working with people who can read).

So because I want to keep this article short, sweet, and to the point, I’m simply going to give you a few quick tips to improve your article success, and send you on your merry way.

1.  Create one new article, blog post, or piece of content per day. Look, out of all of the things I’m going to mention here, this is the most important.  Simply by being consistent in your content creation, you’ll overtake 99.9% of all of your competition in a very short period of time.  Unless you’ve got some paid assistance, I wouldn’t create much more than one article per day, because of the time that it would take, unless you write professionally. 

2.  Use some of the pieces of software that are available to create unique variations on your articles and submit them to as many different websites as you possibly can manage. What I do is simply take thirty minutes or so extra per article and I create unique variations of each sentence before I broadcast them using my software.  The next step I take is that I use the same software that creates the variations to submit my content to the top 200 article directories online.  Since each directory gets a unique article, and the content is high quality because I create the variations myself, I only get positive, raving reviews from all of the directories I submit to. 

3.  You should link back to your original piece of content in your author resource box. That way if Google thinks that it’s just a bunch of duplicate content, (which it won’t, if you re-write the sentences), at least it will all point back to your original article, and your website will come up first in the search engines.  I’ve used this simple strategy to rank on the first page on Google with brand new websites, beating out pages that are 2, 3, even 5 years old.  Give it a go and see if it works.

4.  Promote your original piece of content with a short, 30 second video. What you want to do with your short video commercial is broadcast it to as many video sharing sites as you can.  Then all you have to do is make your video link to your article, and presto!  You’ve got social video traffic!  I use a simple service called Traffic Geyser for all of my video promotions.  If you don’t mind taking a bit longer to generate ridiculous traffic, you can use one of the many free video promotion services online.

5.  The last, and final step in your process is to bookmark your work with OnlyWire.com, a free social bookmarking tool that will submit your site to millions of readers online with the push of a button.  (It’s really cool.)

That’s all for now!  If you do those five steps once per day, every day, you’ll beat out 99.9% of your competition in a couple of months.  Do it for 100 days and let me know what happens!

A lot of individuals on the internet do not realize they have spyware on their computer. Many think, viruses are more to be concerned about.  Everyone has heard about viruses because they are so wide spread and spoke of so often in the news. DLP LCD Plasma HDTV It Will Soon Be Time To Choose

Recently the “Digital Television Transition and Public Safety Act” was passed. This sets February 17th – 2009, as the “final-cut-off-date” for Over-The-Air Analog TV Broadcasts. That means your ‘Rabbit Ears’ and the tall antenna on your roof will be useless except for lawn ornaments. To watch any TV presentation that originates outside of your home you will need new hardware. The minimum will be an HDTV with a digital tuner. The tuner can be integrated or external. If there happens to be an HDTV Transmitter close enough to your home, you can buy an HDTV antenna.

HDTV signals are line-of-sight, so if you are on the edge of a broadcast area there are Roof mounted antennas available. This is how the local broadcast network affiliates will transmit, if you still watch them. There will of course be satellite and cable available for the myriad extra entertainment venues they provide.

Some regions may need an HDTV antenna if your cable provider is slow bringing HDTV to your area or if your area has no cable. If you use one of the Satellite providers you should be in luck. They are transitioning to HDTV as we speak. Ain’t Competition Great.

HDTV SPECIFICATION

The HDTV specification provides for three different types of HDTV, denoted by the number of lines of resolution and the signal type. They are:

*1080p (1080 lines, progressive scan)

*1080i (1080 lines, interlaced)

*720p (720 pixels, progressive)

Any TV not capable of displaying at least 720 lines is not ‘HDTV ready’ and any signal with fewer than 720 lines is not an HDTV signal. So, in order to be properly HDTV capable, a TV needs to be able to display at least 1280 pixels horizontally as well as at least 720 vertically.

The ‘i’ and ‘p’ in the HDTV specification refer to interlaced and progressive scan. The analog TV we’ve been watching for years is interlaced. That simply means that each frame of video is split into two fields. Each field contains alternate lines of the signal (one has the odd, the other the even) and is displayed for 1/60th of a second. Because it happens so fast, your brain interprets each frame as a single image. Progressive scan signals have no fields, they simply display each frame in its entirety for 1/30th of a second. This results in a higher quality image, particularly noticeable in fast-action broadcasts such as sporting events,

Once the decision is made as to how you are going to receive HDTV some decisions need to be made about how you will use the system. Your choices in display technology will depend on your most frequent use of the system. Depending on your interests you will want to evaluate different types of displays and/or controls.

Gamers will probably want different display qualities than a Home Theatre Buff, Sports enthusiast or Business users. Business applications such as Power Point & Spreadsheet display well with most consideration being given to the size of the audience. Avid sports viewers will need true high speed performance. I haven’t been a Gamer since before Intel’s P III, so their concerns will be addressed in another publication.

So what do you prefer?

A front-projection system uses a projector and a separate screen, and it projects images onto the front of that screen. This setup looks most like what you’d find in a movie theater — the projection unit is completely separate from the screen. The projector can be placed on a table or mounted to the ceiling. The picture looks best when displayed on a high-quality screen, but a specially painted, flat wall will work as well.

Rear-projection systems look more like traditional televisions. They display images on the back of a screen rather than the front, and the projector is completely contained within the television itself. You can also set up a rear-projection system with a projector and a special screen, but the term is most often used to describe self-contained TV sets.

For that theatre experience at home, without the sticky floor and screaming kids, I prefer a front-projection DLP Projector for my Home Theatre Room. In my opinion DLP is best for Home Theatre Video’s (DVD Etc. because of higher contrast and deeper black levels, Contrast (3000:1 for DLP, 1000:1 for LCD).

A projector of this type can project on a wall screen up to 120″ in size with high contrast and deep black levels. DLP miniprojectors on the market are around 3 pounds. Most LCD projectors are five pounds or more. These differences are being narrowed as technology progresses. For Business applications such as Power Point & Spreadsheet display these are not noticeable concerns.

I’m a Home Theatre Buff so DLP meets my expectations. But there are other technologies with their own pluses and minuses.

Plasma Displays have great resolution and incredible color definition. With a resolution of 1366 x 768 a plasma display can give virtually a 3-D effect. This in combination with exceptional color reproduction can be quite stunning.

Plasma does have some issues though. They can be subject to ‘Burn in’ and there is a concern with ‘Life Cycle’. At the price levels you will find in display technologies a screen that only lasts 20,000 to 25,000 hours before replacement is needed is problematic. This is possible with Plasma although NEC is working on raising their ‘life cycles’ to 60,000 hours.

LCD’s have an average life cycle of 30,000. LCD Screens deliver a very good picture. The LCD was the first display to have 1080 line resolution. LCD is better in bright light conditions. LCD historically delivers better color saturation than you get from a DLP projector although this is a major focus of new research on DLP tech.

Compared to Plasma, LCD has slow reaction time if you are watch presentations focusing on split-second events such as NASCAR and other sports. Contrast, at 1000:1 is not great compared with Plasma & DLP. Full black is hard to achieve with LCD, black is usually a deep Gray. LCD may also be subject to a screendoor effect, at times seeming to show a division between pixels. Also a potential problem with LCD: Long Term Image Degradation. Although this would most likely happen after a comparable Plasma screen may show effects of a burn in or element failure.

There are so many factors to consider and so much information out there that many more articles can be written. So for now further research and choices are up to you.
