HandsFreed.com – Not sure about you – but for me, trying to drive while chatting with my better half isn’t always easy. Juggling a phone on my ear while desperately trying to search for the cheapest gas station just isn’t for me. Of course there is a solution and if you’re like most people who don’t enjoy sticking anything in their ear [other than fingers of course], maybe it’s time to try a hands-free product such as the Jabra SP5050 Bluetooth Speaker.

Design & Usability: This stylish and sleek speakerphone can be used on the go in any vehicle. It attaches to your sun-visor and can be setup within minutes of use. For those night-crawlers among us – the Jabra even goes into night driving mode turning off the LED allowing the driver to drive without a blue light blinking out the corner of his eye.

Battery: There are tons of good features about this hands-free device including the auto shut-off after 15 minutes of no-phone connection which preserves your battery life. The battery holds its own for approximately 6 hours talk time and 150 hours standby.

Compact: The SP5050 compact device is great for anyone who uses their phone often while driving, or simply for not getting fined. It not only allows you to keep up with the world but also keeps things safe. I have to admit I use it everywhere – I can be spotted sneaking it out my car into the office. This is one of those bluetooth speaker phones you hear about that actually works and is used quite often. Not to mention how great it is for working out, it’s amazing how fast a workout passes when you’re occupied while talking on the phone. Anyways this device gets dragged with me all around town, just because its light weight and easy to carry along almost anywhere.

Prices: Retail price runs at $99.00 at most stores. I snatched mine from JR a couple of months ago, actually caught it on sale at $80 which was a little over $20 in savings after taxes. After the purchase, I assumed it would take awhile to install but it was actually pretty simple; the instructions say “little to no installation” – right on the dot, took me only about 10 minutes to do. I bought it because I kept dropping my phone in the car. Finally decided it was too dangerous to drive without some kind of device to help take phone calls when my family & office are calling every ten minutes.

Cons: Like all products, including this Jabra, there is always some catch; the car-charger (which is included) is 3 feet long! It can often interfere with your driving depending on where you latch it. With the cord being so long it tangles easily, so make sure to charge while not-driving. About sound quality – it has great quality on the streets and urban areas. Once you hit the highways and freeways the noise inside the car reduces the sound quality a bit. But again this is something that I think goes with the territory and isn’t to blame on the device.

Summary: Personally other than the length of the charger I’m overall happy with my Jabra SP5050 compared to a few others I’ve used in the past. I also think the price is justified for this great product.

Travel Photography – The KISS Principle

Keep it simple shutterbug. Travel photography is about capturing a moment, a place or a culture. It is as much about the experiences the photographer has along the way as it is about the image itself. The people you meet and the places you see. No one can deny the satisfaction the photographer gains by carefully planning and executing the perfect shot using a whole host of expensive equipment to get everything just right. However a technically perfect, but emotionally distant shot pales into insignificance next to one that manages to convey it’s message with sensitivity and shows an intimacy with it’s subject.

I have known many a photographer who will spend hours setting up their tripod, attaching all the required components (and some not required ones), cleaning and polishing the lens to within an inch of its life, only to miss those few moments of perfect light, when the sun bursts through the clouds and spreads it’s golden rays over the scene, or the seconds a member of an exotic tribe smiles into their camera.

So how do you keep the quality, but not miss the moment? Get back to basics. Take a long hard look at your kit bag and then leave most of it behind. Take with you only the essentials. Aside from a spare battery set and other such essentials, one camera, one or two lenses, and possibly a polarizing filter should let you cover most situations. Apart from not being weighed down by a heavy bag, you will find yourself thinking less about the technical aspects of photography and more about the image you are taking.

An obvious, but often overlooked aspect of travel photography is getting to know your subject. I don’t mean planning weeks ahead the best way to get to your destination and the best time to go (although this is important too). What do you do once you get there? Walk around the scene. Look at the angles. Look at the people. Speak to people. Become part of the scene. Think about the message you are trying to convey, and the way you want to convey it. Is it about the place itself or the people that live there? Are you looking at the broader picture or the finer details? Or both?

These are all questions that need to be answered at some point. The successful photographer is one who knows the purpose of their shoot and acts accordingly. You may find that you spend more time getting to know your subjects than actually shooting. This however, is no bad thing. It is better to come away with a few memorable images than many average ones. In addition to the images, you will more likely come away with a richer cultural experience. Which for many a traveling photographer, is the real prize.

So while it is easy to be swept up in discussion with other photographers about who has which gadget, don’t forget why you’re there in the first place, and spend a little more time thinking about what you see though the lens rather than the lens itself.

Where Are Diamonds Found and Used?

Three Kinds of Diamonds:

1.) Original Diamonds: These are the original, valuable diamonds. They are measured in karats. One carat equals 0.205 grams. They are used as jewelry.

2.) Bort: A semi-transparent and striated diamond. It is harder than an original diamond and it is used to carve high quality diamonds. In the drilling industry, these diamonds are used for drill bits.

3.) Carbonado: This is a black, uncarved diamond. It is harder than an original diamond and it is used in the manufacturing of drilling equipment.

There is approximately 160 million carats of diamonds being produced each year. The value is about $13 billion at the mine level. A little more then 50% is actually gem quality, which represents about 90% of the total value. The remainder is industrial quality stones used for cutting tools, mining, drill bits, construction and manufacturing.

Diamonds of the past came from India dating back to as early as 500 BC. So, for more than 2000 years they were the only producer of diamonds. Around the 1700s other sources were being found in Brazil. They then became the new world leader in diamond production for about the next 150 years.

Now diamonds are being mined in about 20 countries. 97% of the world’s diamonds by weight and value are produced in eight of the twenty countries. They are Botswana, Russia, South Africa, Canada, Angola, Democratic Republic of Congo, Namibia, and Australia. Five of the top leaders that produce 60% are in Africa, they are; Botswana, South Africa, Angola, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Namibia.

South Africa is the most senior member of this group. Their first discovery was around 1870 and within 10 years this find caused the global market to increase by 1000%. Also due the heavy competition of this big discovery it gave birth to the organization that shaped the diamond industry, known as De Beers.

Steve Jobs Just Says No To iPhone Porn

There has been a lot of talk around the iPhone Porn since it’s release into the mainstream. At the AVE awards convention in Las Vegas recently several industry heavy hitters commented on how they view the iPhone as “the” next adult media platform. There has been talk of all sorts including giving away free adult content feeds in return for you viewing promotional materials.

It seems however, that Steve Jobs is wanting to put the nix on porn on the iPhone. At the Apple press conference earlier this month this statement was released:

But Apple’s plan has restrictions that will probably still ensure that the illicit world of “jailbreaked” applications continues to exist. During his presentation, Steve Jobs flashed up a slide with six categories of apps that won’t be allowed: “Porn, privacy, bandwidth hog, illegal, malicious,” and “unforeseen.” Though Apple didn’t go into details, that probably means “bandwidth hogging” peer-to-peer applications are out along with anything Apple feels could potentially violate media copyrights.

What does this mean for the adult industry? Nothing at the moment. It’s not surprising that Apple is going to try and keep a tight leash on what is developed for the iPhone for the immediate future. Of course if history serves us well it won’t be long before the closely guarded SDK is all over the place and you have renegade developers releasing all sorts of goodies for your iPhone.

The iPhone is the biggest gadget to be released to the general public since the early personal computing revolution the early 1980’s. Millions of them are already being sold and, the price will continue to drop. It won’t be long before the iPhone is part of the normal “free phone with contract” promotions. Having a device in the palm of your hand that gives you just as much connectivity as a laptop or desktop PC is a huge step forward in mobile communications. Right now millions of people have the iPhone however, most people do not. The iPhone also has spawned a whole new generation of smartphone. Since AT&T has an exclusive contract with the iPhone for the first 5 years other carriers are scrambling to be able to develop devices that will offer similar functionality.

Sooner or later Apple will be forced to allow more people access to it’s SDK thus the prospect of adult entertainment being a big player in mobile communication content is simply inevitable. Similar to how the VHS took adult entertainment out of the theaters the iPhone will put such content in the hands of anyone who chooses to view it. I’m sure if you put your imagination to work you can see how such a medium is almost perfect for the adult industry.

If history has taught us anything that is it’s bound to repeat itself. I can see a whole new set of high profile obscenity trails being fuels from adult iPhone content. This is probably the number one factor that has Steve Jobs so outspoken on the subject.
