New Way of Digital TV Broadcasting

In traditional digital broadcasting, all contents are broadcasted to TV channels, regardless of whether or not the viewer is watching the TV. This basically wastes all the bandwidth that could otherwise be used for other services, such as high speed Internet and voice over IP. The new emerging technology uses complicated software to recognizes a viewer’ s request to watch a particular TV program and then sends that program to the viewer. This action takes place transparently without viewer’s knowledge.

In a cable network, groups of homes are connected on a common branch of coax cable. That is, groups of subscribers share access to the same downstream frequencies, and race for access to shared upstream frequencies. Where as, the traditional wireline networks are considered point to point, from a central office directly to a subscriber. Therefore, with sufficient switching capacity placed at the central office, infinite amount of content can be delivered to a single household. Switched Digital Video (SDV) is a new cable technology that attempts to answer this challenge. It was designed as a cost-effective method to expand program availability.

With SDV, as with IPTV, and unlike traditional digital broadcasting, programming terminates at the hub and does not go through the network unless requested. Instead, a receiver, such as set-top-box, signals upstream to request programming, and a hub-based controller receives the request and enables the stream into the network by means of a pool of allocated frequencies. In another word SDV allows operators to switch, rather than broadcast, some channels to individual service groups. A service group is typically made up of 250 or more subscribers (viewers) that use set-top-boxes to watch a TV program. Channels selected for a “switched tier” are delivered via a multicast stream only when a customer in a service group selects them for viewing.

The advantage of using SDV is that cable companies have more bandwidth available to convert into Internet channels during periods of high customer demand. The cable companies can also determine which channels are in more demand and develop localized advertising mechanism for those customers.

Transfer VHS to DVD to Preserve Your Precious Home Movies

Many of us have a stack or in my case a few boxes full of old vhs tapes. They contain priceless memories (like my wedding video) that I want to preserve. To transfer vhs to dvd solutions are many and optimally, your budget and time will help you make the best decision.

There are basically 4 options when it comes to transfer vhs to dvd:

1 – Paying somebody else to do the job. I am sure if you do a little research in Google for “vhs transfer” including your city, you will find many businesses offering their services. Now, It is up to you to find out how professional they are. This is a very expensive solution, if like me, you have a few dozens tapes to transfer. I know I don’t want to keep everything I recorded on my vhs tapes. I could go through watching each and every tape in my collection to select what part I do want to keep and transfer to DVD. There is probably a better option if you already have a computer;

2- Get a VHS – DVD recorder. You can buy a device that does this for around $250. But if the prospect of plugging yet another device in your already packed audio/video unit doesn’t appeal to you. Or the fact that you probably have a vhs and dvd player already installed, then there is little incentive to go spend around $250 for a device that will just sit there when you have transferred all your vhs tapes to dvd.

3- Use a digital camcorder to capture analog video from the vhs player and then convert to a digital format using your computer. This is another way to transfer vhs to dvd. You will, of course need a DVD burner.

4- Since I have to watch every tape and make a selection, I might as well do the whole thing myself. But if you are not technically inclined or have no time, option number 1 is probably your best option. Most of us have a computer at home that we can use to transfer vhs to dvd. All you need is a capture card, some cables, software, a dvd burner and a vhs player. This solution allows for the best flexibility and if later on you discover a few more vhs tapes in a box somewhere, It will be very easy for you to transfer vhs to dvd on the fly.

So, if you are a bit technically savvy and want to make sure your precious video memories are transferred. Option number 4 is probably the best to transfer vhs to dvd. You can probably do this for a few hundreds. You will find plenty of software to do the editing and converting for free or under $50. You can even use Windows Movie Maker which is free and comes with Windows XP Service Pack 2. For those using a Mac, Imovie and iDVD can do the same.

QuickBooks and Vista – Not All Versions Of QuickBooks Are Compatible With Vista

QuickBooks users need to understand Vistaâ€™s compatibility with QuickBooks, because not all versions of QuickBooks are compatible with Vista.

Only QuickBooks 2007, and newer versions, are compatible with Vista. Intuit announced on October 16, 2007, that it is investigating third-party workarounds for QuickBooks users who are using older versions of QuickBooks. However, no other details were given.

This means that any version of QuickBooks prior to 2007 will not be compatible with Vista. This has to do with the new Vista security features.

Be Careful About Upgrading to Vista

For those wishing to upgrade to Vista, they will be forced to upgrade to QuickBooks 2007 (or later versions). For those running versions of QuickBooks older than 2007, they should not upgrade to Vista if they donâ€™t want to also upgrade to QuickBooks 2007. Users of QuickBooks 2007 have a choice: they may upgrade to Vista, or they may stay with their current operating system, as QuickBooks 2007 is compatible with both.

At some point, QuickBooks users will need to be aware when purchasing any new software for their computers. If a product is for Vista only, this forces the user to make a decision: keep the product, and upgrade to Vista and to QuickBooks 2007 (and possibly upgrade other software products as well), or donâ€™t keep the product and donâ€™t upgrade.

The Vista operating system is an overhaul of previous Microsoft operating systems. Itâ€™s a completely new system, and not an upgrade to Windows XP.

Review of Sony Bravia KDL-46V3000 1080p LCD HDTV

The Sony Bravia KDL-46V3000 46″ 1080p LCD HDTV is an elegant looking set with its piano black frame. The black finish is reflective, but not annoyingly shiny like a mirror as long as you don’t put it directly in front of a light source. It’s a serious looking LCD HDTV with its black finish and anti-glare screen. Not only does it look nice aesthetically, but it looks awesome where it counts the most, the picture.

The picture, like the Sony Bravia V2500 models, looks amazing. No annoying glares will ruin your viewing experience and the fogging that hit some of the owners with the V2500 model is gone. If there are any, you must be unlucky. The Sony Bravia KDL-46V3000 1080p LCD HDTV has a 60 Hz refresh rate while the higher end models have 120 Hz so the motion blurring will not be as smooth as the more expensive sets. That doesn’t mean it’s blurry though. It’s still pretty smooth during fast action sequences and you probably won’t be able to tell anyway when playing HD content.

The Sony Bravia KDL-46V3000 1080p LCD HDTV up-scales 480i standard definition content with its Reality Creation Multi Function v1.0 technology and you can see that it truly helps make SD stuff less horrible than it otherwise should be. This basically means watching standard programming is good, but not at the level you’re used to when watching with a CRT, but also not as bad as many other LCD TVs.

The black and the contrast is good unlike what has been expected of LCDs. The colors are rich and the picture comes to life more so than other LCD HDTVs. Side by side with the Samsung or Sharp, the Sony looked better. In fact it can even compete with some of the plasma TVs out there. Just switch to normal mode and not use vivid mode and make some tweaks from there to your liking and the image will be near perfect. Try sharpening the image and increasing the black.

Configuring the settings in the Sony Bravia KDL-46V3000 1080p LCD HDTV is a breeze with the highly regarded XMB menu system that’s also in the PS3. Speaking of the PS3, watching blu-ray on the KDL-46V3000 is simply stunning. If you don’t have a PS3 or a Blu-Ray player, you need to get one if you’re getting an HDTV. HD-DVD is dead.

The Sony Bravia KDL-46V3000 1080p LCD HDTV does not have PIP or picture in picture, but it does have P&P or picture & picture. You can play video from two input sources at the same time, but only from HDMI, TV tuner, and video on the left side of the TV and component on the right. That means no watching HDMI & HDMI at the same time. It’s not a deal breaker since the picture quality is way up there.

Sound quality is good should you choose not to invest in a home theater surround sound system, but it does lack some oomph in the bass department. It’s much better than many LCD panels out there considering how small the piano black frame is.

I recommend the Sony Bravia KDL-46V3000 1080p LCD HDTV if you don’t want to spend a few extra Ben Franklins on the XBR4 and you don’t want the older, but still excellent KDL-46V2500. You can’t go wrong with this choice and it’s one of the best bangs for the buck.

Should I Buy a Metal Detector?

One of the more enjoyable and profitable family hobbies is treasure hunting with a modern metal detector. It’s not just the finding of old coins and lost jewelry, it’s the outside fresh air and the exercise that is good for the body. Getting the whole family involved turns this exciting hobby into quality time spent with your spouse, children or grandchildren.

Many find this to be a financially rewarding hobby as well. The really big finds are not just being found by professionals. Thousands of treasure hunters have found that coin shooting can be very profitable.

Treasures of all kinds are being found: gold and silver coins, war relics, jewelry, gold nuggets, and even old rare bottles from trash dumps from the old ghost towns or home places.
With a little research you can find the old treasure stories in your area…. the old timer who buried his gold and silver coins or an outlaws hidden stash from the past. It takes research and a good metal detector to help you pinpoint the find.

If you use your detector seriously, it could easily pay itself many times over with the old coins and artifacts that you can find. Many people think that treasure hunting requires you to dig big holes to recover lost coins and jewelry. It doesn’t work that way because the lost objects are not always that deep, but there are times when you know it’s time to dig deep!

It’s more of the decomposing leaves, sticks, and grass that make up the top soil. It takes a long, long time for items to actually sink into the ground.

A perfect example of this is hunters finding large cents and colonial coins at only a few inches deep. We consider a deep coin at about 6 – 8 inches. If the ground has not been disturbed, (top soil is there) you will sometimes get a deep detector reading which will require you to dig deeper. With most of the top brand detectors -White’s, Garrett, Fisher, Tesoro, Bounty Hunter, Teknetics, Minelab, etc- that’s not a problem. They have the depth capabilities for any old deep coin.

You will not regret starting this hobby. Who knows, you may even make one of those big finds!
