Cables – Figuring Out Your Home Theater System Installation

You’re thrilled to have that new HDTV and Hi-Definition DVD player. For many, the excitement of purchase dims when they arrive home and see the multitude of cords and multi-colored jacks, knowing that they must be correctly connected in order to make your Home Theater system function properly. No doubt hooking up your Home Theater system can be a challenge, especially if you don’t know which cables will give you the best quality.

Almost all of the new HDTVs found in today’s market have multiple connections on the back of each unit. These are some of the connections you might see on the back of your new HDTV.

Analog coaxial RF Connection: This is a “legacy” connection found on all older TVs. It is the poorest quality TV connection. This is a connection that transports both an audio and a video signal in a purely analog format.

Composite Video: This is the yellow jack that is located on the back of your TV, and it passes Analog video only. This single cable has both Chrominance and Luminance portions of a video signal and can pass up to 480 interlaced lines of resolution.

S-Video: This is a small 4-pin jack that is located on the rear of your television. It is an upgrade in terms of image quality on your television because S-Video separates the Chrominance and Luminance portions of a video signal, which increases the quality of your video image. S-Video is a connection that sends an analog signal with resolution of up to 480 interlaced lines of resolution.

Component Video: The red, blue, and green RCA jacks on the back on your TV make up this connection. The signal for this does not have Audio, and it is an Analog only signal. The Luminance and 2 colors are separated in this connection by component video, which results in true High Definition image quality. Component Video connections allow 1080 progressive lines of resolution (1080p/FullHD) to be passed.

DVI: Digital Video Interface has a true digital video connection, but no audio. This type of connection was the Hi-Def standard until recently and provides up to 1080 progressive lines of resolution.

High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI): This connection allows a solo connection between your auxiliary equipment and HDTV. It is a fully digital Audio and Video connection. Almost all new HDTV’s provide this connection.

In order to help you get the most out of your new HDTV, consider the following scenarios.

1) In this scenario you want to hook-up a brand new HDTV with a new Blu-Ray DVD player. A single HDMI cable is all that is needed to connect these devices. This will maximize the quality of sound and video passing between the Blu-ray and the HDTV. Also, this is the only cable required to connect these two components, excluding power plugs.

2) For this example you want to connect a brand new HDTV, a new Blu-ray DVD player, and a full surround sound system. The best way to connect these three devices, provided the Surround A/V Receiver has HDMI input/output capability, is to use a short HDMI cable from the Blu-ray to the A/V Receiver and run a longer HDMI cable from the A/V Receiver’s output to the HDTV. This allows the receiver to switch the HDMI connections and is especially useful if your new HDTV only has one HDMI jack and you have multiple pieces of equipment with HDMI jacks that you want to connect. It will also make it possible for the A/V Receiver to use the digital Audio track from the Blu-ray player in order to give you mind-blowing surround sound when playing your new Blu-ray DVDs.

3) In this instance you want to connect a DVD player with an older HDTV and a surround sound system. When you go about connecting these items, the first thing to do is check what type of video connections your DVD player and HDTV have. Check Scenario 2 if your HDTV has a DVI or HDMI connection and your DVD player has either connections. If the HDTV’s best connection is a DVI connection and your DVD player has HDMI, a simple conversion cable can help to convey the digital Video signal to the HDTV. To pass the digital Audio portion of your signal from your DVD player to your A/V Receiver, you need either a Coaxial Digital (the orange jack on you’re A/V Reciever) or a Toslink Optical (the small square jack that says ‘optical on the A/V Reciver).

If you use one of the set-ups that have been described here, you will have an optimal connection, making all of your Hi-Definition equipment work together. But there are many different ways to configure the equipment beyond what is listed here. If none of the above cases fit your situation, read the manufacturer’s manuals supplied with the equipment.

Blu-Ray Players – Are They That Good?

Thinking about purchasing one of the new Blu-ray DVD players? Are they worth it? If you are a true audiophile, or home theater buff the answer may be in this article.

The Blu-ray players are the next-generation digital video platform. The players and their discs can record, store and play back high-definition video and digital audio, as well as computer data. Their big advantage being the enormous amount of information a Blu-ray disc can hold.

A single-layer Blu-ray disc is about the same size as a standard DVD. However it can hold up to 27 GB of data. This equates to more than two hours of high-definition video, or about thirteen hours of standard video.

Another difference is: the standard DVD player has a red laser that reads the DVD. With the Blu-ray DVD player it is a blue laser (technically violet) that reads the disc.

The Blu-ray discs have a much superior picture, and sound than the standard DVD discs. And, best of all they are indestructible. Something the standard DVDs are not. There is a video out that has a fantastic demonstration of this.

First, steel wool was vigorously rubbed over the playing surface of a Blu-ray disc. Then the disc was played, no problem, it played back fine. Next, came the ball point pen. They wrote all over the playing surface, no problem with playback.

After the ball point pen came the pizza cutter. You would think that this would be the end of the disc, but it was not. It played back fine. Then came the butcher knife, no problem, the disc is still around. The last demo was trying to burn the Blu-ray disc. That did not work either. The disc was still in excellent playing condition.

The one thing that movie buffs, or audio buffs worry about is a damaged CD or DVD disc. I loaned, my bad, one of my favorite DVDs out to someone, who I thought, would take care of it. They did not and I had to replace it.

When you rent out standard DVDs, unless you are the first one to rent them, they usually look like people eat off of them and then use them as Frisbees. Have you ever gotten a bad DVD and it won’t play on your DVD player when you get it home?

The point being, wouldn’t it be nice to know that, no matter what happens to a Blu-ray DVD disc it will faithfully play back like it is brand-new?

Think about the last time you went to your local movie rental store that there was a small section, off by itself, marked “Blue-ray” DVDs. Of course, unless you have a Blu-ray DVD player you probably walked right by them. Right now there is hardly what you would want to call a ton of Blu-ray discs out there, but this is changing rapidly.

It’s a new and very exciting technology and one that is here to stay. Oh, by the way, that small section of the movie rental store will be getting much, much larger by the week.

One studio, for example, Warner Brothers has more or less bagged the HD DVD format in favor of a Blue-ray exclusive. This means more movies than ever are going to be coming out in that format from them. Others will follow suit.

The advent of the Blu-ray players and discs are nothing but exciting. We think you will find them exciting, too! You can purchase a quality Blu-ray player in the $300.00 price range. It will even enhance your current standard DVDs to High Definition playback. Make sure your current TV is compatible to receive the full benefits of Blu-ray players. If playing your CDs or burned CDs with MP3 files are an issue, make sure the model you choose has that option. Many even in the lower price brackets do.

Satellite TV vs Cable TV, Who Has The Best?

We all knew cables and satellites are the main paid TV services in United States. Dish Network and DirecTV are the major two players on the satellite TV side; while Time Warner, Comcast, Adelphia, Cable Vision, Charter Communication are some of the well known names on cables.

So how does satellite TV match up to cables? Is satellite TV better, or it’s the old school cables? Let’s check out some of the facts on satellite TV vs cable TV here.

Popularity

Although both Dish Network and DirecTV are growing their business fast, cable TV is still much popular than satellites at nowadays.

At the time of writing, DirecTV claims that they own up to 18 millions subscribers; while Dish Network 15 millions. On the other hand according to market survey, major cable TV provider Comcast cable TV take up over 20 million subscribers in many states; while Time Warner 10 millions, Adelphia 5 millions, Cable Vision 3 millions and Charter Communication 6 millions in United States.

Programming quality and variety

Cable uses TV cables; while satellite TV uses decoder and dish for the signal transmission. Cable programs normal come in analog or partly, digital signals — the picture quality are generally good, but not as good as satellite TV that offers 100% digital picture in their broadcast.

In most situation, cable TV offers up to 150 channels. In contrast, both main satellite TV providers (Dish and DirecTV) offer up to 255 programming choices. On top of that, DISH Network and DirecTV offer plenty of HDTV programming, which it’s hardly found on major conventional cables. What amazed me a lot is that Dish Network had just throw out another upgrading campaign that raises their HD channels to more than 30! (Compare to others who are less then 20).

Bundle services

Cable TV services normally come along with cable phone and cable broadband services — which is good for most new home buyers. With cable TV bundle package (Comcast for example), you’ll get entertainment, communication, and even high speed Internet services. The service provide much convenience to the users (imagine settling all your home bills with just one company) and also, they (the cable TV) are able to pull down the selling price (due to better mass selling), which in turns create a better value for cable user’s services.

Satellite TV on the other hand has less to offer. Satellite Internet was once offered along side with satellite TV deals. However the latency problem and constant disconnection during storms had fail satellite TV company in offering bundle services (satellite Internet) to their clients. Thus

Satellite TV wins cables a lot when it comes to pricing.

Cable TV costs you $37.30 a month for 64 channels, plus $10.95 a month to add a few digital channels. Installation in one room is $39.95, plus $9.95 for each additional room. While Dish Network basic package starts at $19.99 and DirecTV package starts at $29.99, it is without doubt that satellite TV are much better bargains when compare with cable TV.

So Cable TV and satellite TV, who has the best? There is no absolute right answer.

Both services have their own weakness – Cable TV are a lot more expensive and poor programming quality/variety. Dish Network and DirecTV, on the other hand are just TV companies and cannot supply you good additional services (in general). Both services have their advantages — cable TV bundle services offer you great savings in overall home expenses; satellite TV offer better programming quality in a much cheaper price.

The best I can advise is that reviews both services carefully and decide the one that suits your needs the best.

New Tiscali Television – Review

Why are you not using the new Tiscali TV service? If it is available to you sign up today! I have used all of the competitors services over the years and I can honestly tell you that this is the best digital TV service available in the UK today, end of story. It’s technically streets ahead of the competition and on price and value wins completely hands down, what you get for your money and what can do with the service in terms of interactivity and viewing content is truly staggering. There is no way in this one article I could cover everything that it has to offer, this will have to be a general overview and I shall have to cover the mains areas of interest separately.

Tiscali television also comes bundled with 8 MB broadband, free line rental and a choice of free weekend or anytime calls from an unbelievably low £15.99 – £19.99 a month (I am not kidding!) Not only that but there are free international calls thrown in too. Just on line rental alone if you switched from BT you would be saving up to £130 a year let alone whatever you may be paying to your existing broadband provider or Sky/Virgin – all I can say is we’re looking at a give away here and you would be mad not to pocket the savings by switching to a Tiscali television bundle today. The one drawback is that it is not available to everyone in the UK yet but the footprint is growing weekly with hopefully 50% of UK homes enabled by the end of 2008.

Quite often people ask “Is this service viewed on my computer?” and the answer is no, this is a fully fledged digital TV service so yes you watch it on your TV in the living room. The TV broadcast is primarily delivered down your phone line, so no need for a satellite dish and you don’t need to be in a cabled area, the digital TV box is also enhanced with two internal free-view tuners that you can take advantage of, if you happen to have a free-view arial. This enables you record up to 3 channels whist watching another by also supplementing the DSL signal (phone line) with the two DTT signals from the free-view tuner.

Where Virgin lost out, Tiscali television has gained, in a deal with BSkyB that will add the full set of Sky basic channels – including Sky One, Sky Two, Sky Three, Sky Arts, Sky Travel, Sky News and Sky Sports News to its channel line up. This comes in addition to the Sky Movies and Sky Sports channels which can also be added to your Tiscali television package. So you are not going to miss out on the premium content delivered by Sky like 24, Lost, The Simpsons and Prison Break,..

In addition to this premium broadcast content Tiscali TV can offer the biggest range of both Video On Demand (Over 1000 movies) and TV On Demand, whole series like 6 Foot Under, Desperate Housewives and Lost as examples enabling you to create in affect your own TV schedule and watch what you want, when you want.
