LCD TV Sales To Almost Double By 2012

The number of LCD TVs shipped is expected to nearly double in just 4 years according to the latest figures from market-watcher, iSuppli.
Worldwide shipments of thin tellies for 2008 is expected to be just over 100 million but this figure will rocket to 193.9 million by 2012. The explosive growth is being [...]

The Handbag TV From HANNSpree

Those oddballs at HANNSpree, who like nothing more than making wacky TVs, have been a little quiet of late. Sure they’ve launched some displays and TVs, normal by HANNSpree standards, but nothing too off the wall.
Well, they have now. This is the HANNSMilano, the company’s answer to that often asked question: “What Happens [...]

Sharp Rolls Out World’s Thinnest LCD TVs

sharp aquos skinny.jpg

Now that people have gotten over the novelty of how big HDTVs can get, manufacturers are waging a new war about who can make the skinniest.

Sharp is claiming that its new X Series AQUOS LCD TVs in 46in, 42in, and 37in flavours are the thinnest out there, with a waistline of just 3.44cm thick. That’s at the thinnest part, of course, but it’s still thin. Samsung however showed an LCD TV recently with a ridiculously thin 1cm waistline but since it’s not in production, Sharp gets to keep the Size Zero crown. For now.

The really clever bit about these TVs though is the use of a removable tuner section which can stored elsewhere and connected to the display with one cable. This means you don’t have to fiddle around the back of the telly trying to install cables.

The TVs are all Full HD, boast a high contrast ratio of 15,000:1 and use 12-bit BDE (Bit Depth Expansion) colour value rendering for brighter colours. They sport three HDMI inputs each, have 120Hz image processing for smoother fast image processing and house a 3-way, 8-speaker system.

They launch in Japan first in March.-Martin Lynch

Evesham Does Mini-LCD With DVD

evesham da104 tv.jpg Evesham’s on a roll these days with more product launches than time to cover them all.

A few weeks back it was rolling out its budget 26in HDTV and this week it’s back with a little ‘un. This is the DA104, a ‘travel buddy’ says Evesham, in the shape of a 10.4in LCD TV with in-built DVD player and a card reader for all those dodgy torrent downloads of Heroes off the Net.

The in-built digital TV tuner gives you all the Freeview channels and it weighs in at a reasonably light 1.48Kg. There’s a 12V power adapter for use in the car and the card reader is compatible with SD/MS/MMC media.

There’s also a handy USB port for hooking up storage sticks or portable HDDs. It costs £199.-Martin Lynch

Evesham’s 26in Budget HDTV

evesham alqemi 26in.jpg

Evesham is continuing its TV push, following last week’s stylish 9.2in LCD telly, with the introduction of a 26in addition to its Alqemi HDTV range.

Again, price is a major draw here with this good-looking LCD TV, the 26V, coming in at a pocket-friendly £349. It has a native resolution of 1366 x 768 so it’s ready for 720p and 1080i video. There’s one HDMI slot and the display boasts a response time of 8ms which should help with a certain amount of image smearing, or ‘ghosting’, during fast action video.

Other connections include twin Scart, S-Video, component and composite, VGA and DVI inputs. There is also a Freeview-ready version, the 26VX, for an extra £50 which sports a CAM (Conditional Access Module) slot for TopUp TV.

Possibly the most impressive feature of this TV – assuming it doesn’t suck on the performance front – is the 3-year, in-home swap out warranty.-Martin Lynch

Evesham Does Ultra-Portable LCD TV

evesham 9.2in lcd tv.jpg Evesham’s bucking the trend on this one with a tiny 9.2in widescreen LCD TV, designed to be portable and cheap.

The TV-930 with it’s oddly-sized 9.2in screen is designed to be usable - without squinting – as a second TV in home. The fact that it weighs less than 1Kg is also a bonus when it comes to moving it from room to room. The 12V cigarette power adaptor also makes it usable in cars and motor homes. It connects via the usual AV outputs to DVD players, games consoles or camcorders.

The TV measures 240 x 172 x 33mm and has a display resolution of 640 x 480 – nothing to write home about but, at £120, it could do well with people not that concerned with video quality. Full specs after the jump. -Martin Lynch

HANNSpree HANNSFries TV Doesn’t Promote Obesity At All

HANNSpree is known for making some pretty unique LCD TVs. They cover everything from fire trucks to elephants to baseballs and more, but this is a bold new step. The HANNSFries TV look like a pack of fries, and the accompanying remote control looks like a ketchup packet. I am glad HANNSpree finally created a fry TV, my newborn’s fast food-themed room just wasn’t complete without this. You have to start those kids out early if you want them to be horribly overweight and not athletic. This 10-inch LCD TV has yet to have a price or release date. –Travis Hudson
