Binaural Head Mic Makes You Feel Like You’re There, Man

If you want to record music that will sound amazing in headphones, retaining and delivering the space that the music was recorded in, this is how you do it. The KU 100 Dummy Head by Georg Neumann is a binaural recording device that has a mic in each ear, and the sound it records is strikingly true to how it would sound if the listener was in the position of the head.

And yes, this is where the name of that Pearl Jam album came from, as they used one of these bad boys in the studio. Is there anything better than well recorded, spatially-rich music on a good set of headphones? –Adam Frucci

Muttering Hat Amplifies the Voices Inside Your Head

Can’t get rid of the voices inside of your head? Well, why not make them louder (and look like a mental patient in the process). Created by Kate Hartman, the Muttering Hat is a goofy-looking hat made up of hacked MP3 players, headphones, and microphones. One form of the hat lets you listen to pre-recorded mumblings as you go about your day-to-day tasks. (Cause you know, listening to music is so boring). The other version, puts your inner thoughts on speakerphone, so as you mumble to yourself, anyone near you can strap off one of the hat’s giant ear balls and listen in on what you’re saying. In other words, you’ll never be able to silently judge someone again. And that in itself is reason enough to pass on this hat. – Louis Ramirez

Manufacturing Error Delays Palm Treo 680’s Launch

palmreallysorry.jpgI hope you weren’t looking to get your hands on the Treo 680 anytime soon since it’s looks like a manufacturing gaffe has delayed shipment for a little while. Apparently, some Einstein forgot to connect the internal microphone, or, as one patriotic blogger put it, it’d be like “if Ford sent out 10,000 Explorers without connecting the brakes.” Some 144,000 Treo 680s were sent out that need to be returned to the factory for fixin’.

Considering they’ve tried shipping it already, I would imagine that we should be seeing it en masse sooner rather than later. Though I must say, not everyone is universally praising the smartphone.

Archos ‘Strap-On’ Camcorder For Extreme Sports

archos helmet camcorder.jpg I already love Archos and I’m not afraid to say that I would love them even more if they would send me a few of their products for Christmas. The noble art of bribing journalists is just not what it used to be.

Meet the Archos Helmet Camcorder – that’s the little thing on the right of the photo that looks like James Bond’s torch/flamethrower. Designed for anyone that does extreme sports, this is possibly the best way to capture the thrill of the moment. Strap it onto your helmet and jump off that cliff, or bridge, or whatever is likely to scare the crap out of you. It’s compatible with most of the Archos portable media players and will cost £100 when it comes out later this month.

It even sports an in-built microphone so that you can relive that moment when your voice broke and you started screaming like a girl.

Impressive specs for such a small device – check them out after the jump.-Martin Lynch
