iPod Sales Top 100 Million

apple ipod white.jpg
You gotta love the well-oiled machine that is the Apple PR department. Just a week after EMI and Apple kicked DRM into touch – for a price, of course – Apple rolls out the impressive stats that the iPod has sold 100 million units. That’s impressive in anyone’s book.

Anyone would think there’s a link between the timing of these iPod-related announcements.

As the ‘fastest selling music player in history’, the iPod has had five versions and 10 different models.

Steve Jobs, in the official press release, wanted to thank you all for your continued support and, as a sign of his appreciation, tell you that for one day only iTunes downloads would be completely free and he’ll pick up the tab.

Hahahahahahahahahaha…

See what some famous people thunked about it after the jump.-Martin Lynch

“It’s hard to remember what I did before the iPod,” said Mary J. Blige, Grammy Award-winning singer. “iPod is more than just a music player, it’s an extension of your personality and a great way to take your favorite music with you everywhere you go.”

“Without the iPod, the digital music age would have been defined by files and folders instead of songs and albums,” said John Mayer, Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter and guitarist. “Though the medium of music has changed, the iPod experience has kept the spirit of what it means to be a music lover alive.”

“I take my running shoes and my iPod with me everywhere,” said Lance Armstrong, seven-time Tour de France champion. “I listen to music when I run. Having my music with me is really motivating.”

Nokia 5700 Makes European Debut

nokia 5700.jpg

For those of you not obsessed with anorexic phones, Nokia thinks it has just the answer with the musically inclined 5700 XpressMusic and its twisty bottom.

This is the successor to the old 3250, which also had the rotating rear, but comes with a few more tweaks and a cooler look. The design is a little more curvy and there’s a proper 3.5mm headphone jack. It’s 3G with quad-band GSM and Bluetooth and, I do like that widescreen display which has a resolution of 240×320 for viewing videos and photos. The camera stays the same at 2MP but the whole thing is 15g lighter than the 3250.

The twisting base offer access to the four key functions: music player, camera, video call and smartphone. Memory can be expanded up to 2GB using microSD cards. The downside seems to be that there’s no mention of an FM radio and internal memory is a measly 35Mb.

The price, when it ships in Q2, will be around £240 before taxes and subsidies.-Martin Lynch

LG Prada Touchscreen Phone: Tres Chic, Tres Cher

lg prada.jpg If you can’t bother waiting for iPhone, you could always opt for LG’s Prada phone, being touted as the first fully-touchscreen phone. Expect some controversy with that claim from the fat, PDA/phone quarter.

The Prada KE850 weighs 85g, is 12mm thick [a weenie bit thicker than the iPhone] and boasts an extra wide LCD for all that touchy-feely goodness. The screen offers a decent resolution of 400 x 240 pixels widescreen and the in-built 2MP camera can record video at 30fps. There’s no doubt it’s pretty but it’s not 3G and has no Internet capabilities which is fine for those that don’t want the world crammed into a single device.

At almost £400 though, it doesn’t come cheap, but that’s fashion for you: style over just about everything else. Jump now for more specs.-Martin Lynch
