Xbox 360 Getting New Controller: Ugly Green Too

xbox 360 green controller.jpg

Rather than let Sony hog all the console news at the Leipzig Games Convention, Microsoft has confirmed earlier musings that there will be a new improved controller for the Xbox 360.

Try not to wet your pants yet though as this is no major overhaul we’re talking about here. The new controller will look like the current one but will have an improved d-pad for use in games - like footie - where the d-pad is the prime means of control.

Speaking to Eurogamer, Microsoft said:

PS3 Swells To 160GB & Gets Funky Wireless Keypad

ps3 keypad.jpg

Sony’s on a roll this week revealing details of the new PSP 3000, and now it’s planning to make potential PS3 consumers happy by rolling out a whopping 160GB model as well as previewing a wireless keypad.

The new 160GB PS3 is expected to go on sale here on October 15 for around £350, and it will come bundled with Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, a voucher for the game Pain on the PlayStation Store and the Dualshock 3 Wireless controller. Considering that UK is just about to get the new 80GB PS3 tomorrow, some potential customers may find themselves little confused.

Sony dropped the official details at this weeks Games Convention in Leipzig but don’t be expecting a massive change from the PSP Slim & Lite already out there.

In terms of looks and size, it’s identical but there are two major features being added.

Telecoms: Ericsson tosses its chips into European joint venture

Ericsson is putting its wireless microchip business into a joint venture with its Franco-Italian rival STMicroelectronics as the companies look to expand their customer base in the face of slowing mobile phone sales.

The new business, which will be jointly run by the two firms, will be number three in the mobile chip industry behind the US leaders Qualcomm and Texas Instruments. Based in Geneva, the as yet unnamed venture will employ nearly 8,000 people in a unit that last year would have generated $3.6bn (£1.9bn) in revenues.

The deal was warmly welcomed by Nokia, one of the venture’s key customers, as “a positive move” that would create a “strong industry player”. Analysts, however, pointed out that the Finnish firm, which makes four out of every 10 handsets sold worldwide, is no fan of Qualcomm, having been embroiled in bitter legal disputes with the US firm, and a stronger European rival would suit the company.

Ericsson is putting its mobile platforms business, which specialises in modems and designing multimedia phones, and $1.1bn in cash into the venture. STMicroelectronics, created just last month through the merger of STMicro’s mobile phone chip business with NXP Semiconductors of the Netherlands, will put in its wireless chip-design business, worth an estimated $1.2bn.

The venture will supply chips for handsets ranging from bottom-of-the-range pre-pay phones to the next generation of internet-enabled multimedia devices. As well as Nokia, the new venture will count SonyEricsson, Samsung, LG and Sharp as its major customers. The only one of the top five handset makers the venture does not supply is the US-based Motorola.

Ericsson’s chief executive, Carl-Henric Svanberg, will be chairman of the board of the business and STMicroelectronics’ chief executive, Carlo Bozotti, will be vice-chairman.

The deal comes as sales of mobile phones begin to show some signs of slowing down and there is consolidation in other parts of the industry. Last month, for instance, Nokia took control of the British mobile phone software company Symbian. Nokia helped create the business, with the UK-based Psion, 10 years ago.

Yesterday’s deal will allow Ericsson to focus on its telecoms networks business, which has suffered as the credit crunch bites and operators rein in spending.

Analysts warned that the venture could be bad news for the UK-based Arm Holdings, which designs processor chips for mobiles. Nick James at Panmure Gordon said the deal - along with STMicro’s acquisition of NXP - represents “a pretty intense wave of consolidation”.

Though the deal does not directly challenge Arm’s position as the dominant processor architecture for mobile phones, he said, “it does reduce the number of potential licensees and may put further pressure on Arm’s licensing revenue.”

PS3 80GB Arives This Friday

80gb ps3.jpgSony may not be rushing to cut the price of its pricey PS3 console but it is at least boosting the storage space with a new 80GB version to replace the 40Gb one. And the good news is that it’s coming a week early, landing this Friday.

According to new listings at key online retailers like Play.com and Amazon UK, the 80GB is listed as being available from this Friday, August 22, and not August 27, like Sony had previously led us to believe.

Sony’s Flagship X4500 TVs Come Wrapped In Silver

sony bravia x4500.jpg

It’s big telly time with Sony launching a new flagship series, the Bravia X4500 family, in 40in, 46in and 55in sizes.

The TVs [above] are Full HD 1080p models and boast some new styling, with a ‘floating’ design and translucent frame. And let’s not forget the sterling silver speaker covers. How posh. Optional speaker covers come in ‘Ruby Red or Obsidian Black’ and there’s 4 HDMI slots as standard.

On the performance front the TVs use the new Bravia Engine 2 Pro processing technology which claims to “filter, clean and optimise image data before it’s displayed.” These are also the first Bravia TVs that can connect with other consumer devices using DLNA technology for sharing content like music and photos.

Allman Brothers Sue Yet Another Record Label Over iTunes Royalties

Reuters is running an article about how the Allman Brothers Band is suing Universal Music for apparently not paying the band royalties owed for iTunes downloads. This seemed like yet another example of a record label squeezing its artists, while insisting that it’s always looking out for the artists’ best interests. Of course, then I remembered that this isn’t the first time this has come up with the Allman Brothers. More than two years ago, we wrote about the Allmans suing Sony over the same issue. At that time, there was a dispute over how the label was counting iTunes downloads, and which clause iTunes downloads fit under in the band’s contract. This recent lawsuit seems like a similar dispute with Universal, but it does make you wonder why the band sued Sony back in 2006, but waited until now to sue Universal?

Sony Home Cinema Systems With Teeny Weeny Speakers

sony davis50.jpg

Sony has unwrapped some new BRAVIA Theatre Systems with those dinky little speakers that promise - despite their mouse-sized proportions - to roar like lions.

The new DAV-IS50 replaces the first system with tiny speakers, the DAV-IS10, promising a total of 450Watts of power, enough to really cheese off the neighbours.

The diminutive glossy black control centre is just over 21cm wide by 10cm tall and houses a slot-loading DVD/CD/MP3 player with surround-sound processing and an RDS FM/AM radio tuner.
