Firefly TV Show To Return As Online Game
Popular cult sci-fi series Firefly is about to get resurrected, again, as an online game from Multiverse. The brilliant spawn from Buffy/Angel creator, Joss Whedon, was chopped after just 11 episodes in 2002 but has maintained a massive fan base – so vocal in fact that Whedon managed to get the green light and make the fun movie version, Serenity. Firefly is destined not to die off it seems, with Fox Television selling the gaming rights to Multiverse, makers of a popular MMO engine.
“Television series can be really good properties to turn into MMOs, because when you make a TV series, not only do you need great characters, but you need to create a full, rich, compelling place. If you’re doing science fiction, you have to really think it out and create an incredibly rich environment that is compelling in its own right, and worth exploring and going back to week after week. That’s what Joss Whedon did with Firefly.â€
The game will expand way beyond the main characters and, while expected some time in 2008, its toughest battle will not be with other online games but with the very force that has managed to keep the franchise flame burning: fanatical fans.-Martin Lynch
